Personal life and career
Taylor was born in Des Moines, Iowa. He grew up raised by his mother in poverty, and in fact, did not meet his father until he was 32 years old, but the two eventually built a strong relationship. In his youth, he performed in local bands including Stone Sour, which he co-founded in 1992, and returned to along with lead guitarist James Root, during its revival in 2000. Prior to joining Slipknot, he worked in a local Des Moines sex shop called The Adult Emporium where, in 1997, band members Mick Thomson, Joey Jordison and Shawn Crahan confronted him on joining as vocalist, threatening him if he did not comply. Shortly after, Taylor joined Slipknot, promptly terminating Stone Sour until its revival three years later. Taylor replaced the band's original vocalist, Anders Colsefini, who then begun to assume his role as backing vocalist. His first aspiration as a member of the band was later that year, when Slipknot recorded the follow-up to Mate. Feed. Kill. Repeat., a demo entitled Crowz which contained an equal balance of songs sung by both Corey Taylor and Anders Colsefini. Crowz will never will be released as said by all of the members. In 1998, the band recorded the Slipknot Demo which was sent to Roadrunner Records, who grew ecstatic over the band, earning Slipknot a recording contract.
In 2000, Taylor was approached by Stone Sour's original rhythm guitarist, Josh Rand, with songs Rand had been working on at the time. Taylor was interested in the thought of reforming the ensemble, and eventually they were able to produce nearly the same line-up as Stone Sour had enjoyed before disbanding. While Slipknot toured, Taylor and Rand worked together for a year and a half writing, until realizing their songs were sufficient enough to record. Stone Sour was reformed under the name Project X, under which they recorded a demo in 2000. Project X was shortly after renamed "SuperEgo", and from there the band recorded the Click Here to Exit demo. By the end of 2000 the group had again disbanded due to Taylor and Root's obligations to Slipknot, and their recording of Iowa, but the band reformed again in 2002 under the original name Stone Sour, and on August 27, 2002, the band's self-titled debut was released.
As well as lending his vocal talents to Stone Sour, Taylor has also performed guitar on four songs the band has recorded, "Sillyworld", "Through Glass", "Zzyzx Rd.", and the Come What(ever) May bonus track "Wicked Game". Outside Slipknot and Stone Sour, Taylor has founded Great Big Mouth Records, produced Walls of Jericho's EP Redemption, Facecage's album, "III", and made guest appearances on a number of albums, as well as on the Roadrunner United project, performing vocals on "The Rich Man" from the project's album The All-Star Sessions. He also performed with Audacious P, a Tenacious D cover band featuring himself and original Slipknot guitarist Josh Brainard, Dum Fux, and planned contributing to Anthrax's latest untitled album, though conflicts emerged in his schedule and he will now be contributing to only select songs, rather than the entire album, as originally planned.
Taylor has battled with alcoholism, which most notably involves an event on November 23, 2003, when an intoxicated Taylor attempted to jump from an eighth-floor balcony at the Hyatt Hotel in Los Angeles, California. His wife at the time, Scarlett, managed to talk him out of it, however afterwards she told him that if he wouldn't become sober, she would leave him.[4] Despite reportedly never drinking or taking drugs for a number of years, Taylor and Scarlett divorced, Scarlett gaining custody of their son, Griffin. He has many tattoos relating to his former wife and son on his body.
Taylor currently writes a monthly column for the UK rock magazine Rock Sound.
Corey Taylor took over vocals for Anders Colsefini. Anders Colsefini was unhappy for this change so he quit the band leaving Corey for the vocals position
